I finally finished the first of two "100 Good Wishes" quilts I am making for our daughter and couldn't be happier with how it turned out. There were a few snags along the way ~ my hand kept cramping up due to all of the cutting and our wash machine overflowed during the rag process ~ but the end result is a beautiful quilt; one full of love & wishes from close family and friends.

I've been asked why I chose the "rag" design. The answer to that is twofold. first, I loved how soft/fluffy the top looks/feels when finished. Second, I wanted to make the quilt in its entirety. Since I'm not a quilter by nature I needed a project that was good for beginners and this design fit the bill. It was really very easy to make, but I learned two very important lessons along the way....

Lesson 1: Cutting the Seams
I completely underestimated how long it would take to cut each seam to ensure the quilt ragged correctly when washed. I thought I'd sit down one evening and in a few hours have every seam snipped and all loose threads clipped. WRONG! Oh, I was soooo very wrong. It took FOREVER to cut each seam and snip loose threads. Due to the extra bulk (I used two pieces of flannel as a filler instead of one) I could only cut half of a seam at a time. I'd say it took about 12 -hours to cut/trim the quilt top.

In addition, I also misjudged which scissors to use when cutting each seam. A regular scissors is too long and hard to control. I tried using it on the practice quilt and wound up cutting through a few seams. This resulted in a trip back to the sewing machine and a scissor switch. With the regular scissors out, I moved onto a small embroidery scissors. While the length was great - it was a killer on my fingers. I actually lost the feeling in my right index finger for 2 weeks after cutting the seams on the practice quilt. I thought for sure I did permanent damage but thankfully over time the feeling has come back and the tingling stopped. If you plan to make a rag quilt of your own I would highly recommend a spring loaded scissors that you can hold like a pliers. Even with that it's best to take a break when working on a big project. During one marathon cutting session my hand kept cramping up, which was no fun at all.

Lesson 2: Washing
The overall quilt size is 10 squares across by 11 squares down. It's a nice size to cuddle with and will still fit in a regular washer/dryer. However, I learned the hard way that the first wash cycle should be monitored closely. I guess because I didn't have any issues washing the practice quilt, which is doll size, that I didn't think there would be problems washing the big quilt. I've said it before and I'll say it again - WRONG! Oh I was so very wrong. I turned the washer on and then went about my merry way paying no attention at all to the fact that the machine and rinse basin became clogged and overflowed. Ugg, what a mess. Thankfully the washer/dryer are in the basement so the water didn't have any place to go, but Yuck , yuck, and more yuck. The washer/rinse basin were full of loose threads/fibers that came out of the quilt as it "ragged" and let me tell you there were a lot of them. So much so that on the second wash we put a lint catcher on the hose that drains into our rinse basin/utility sink and it was completely full when the cycle ended. (We've actually gone through two more lint catchers since the initial wash and I think we've finally managed to capture all the remnants from the quilt.) Save yourself the mess and either use lint catchers or monitor your wash cycle if you ever make a rag quilt on your own. It will be worth the extra time it takes to babysit your wash machine. Oh, and while on the subject of washing - let me throw out a dryer alert as well. You will need to stop the dryer after about 15-minutes and empty the lint trap. It will be full trust me.

Despite a few mishaps along the way this was a great project and I had a lot of fun making it. I'm now starting work on the scrapbook that will accompany this quilt, and once that's finished I will begin work on Quilt #2. Wish me luck!!

Piecing, Sewing, & Cutting - Oh My!

I've made great strides in quilt #1. The entire blanket is sewn together and I've begun the loooong process of cutting each seam. Little by little I'm getting there, but I've had to put the quilt aside for now as we've been running like crazy on the weekends and I haven't had time to get back to it. That's summer though, so I can't complain :-)

I can't wait until all seams have been cut so I can wash it, and see the rag effect take place. I don't think it will fit in my washer so I'll be heading to our local Laundromat so I can use one of their industrial washers and dryers. I think between 2 and 3 washes should do it.

I'm really happy with how it's all come together thus far. I hope to have it finished by the end of August, and then I can start working on the book of wishes.

It's Time To Make The Sandwiches :-)

The squares I received from friends, family, co-workers, and on-line groups for "Quilt #1" have been washed, ironed, and cut to size. In addition, the backing squares and middle felt squares are ready to go. So, what does this mean??? Well, it's time to make the sandwiches. Woo hoo, let the sewing begin!!

Each squish that I received will now be turned into a sandwich of sorts. The squish will be the top piece of fabric, two felt pieces will make up the middle, and one piece of backing fabric will act as the bottom. The sandwich will then be sewn together with an "x" marks the spot pattern, and there you have it, a super cute fabric sandwich. As Rachel Ray would say "Yum-O"!

I'll post again once the sandwiches are all stitched up. Until then I'll be a crazy sewing fool :-)

(PS - In the practice quilt I made I only used one piece of felt in the middle of the sandwich. I thought it was a bit thin so I decided to double up on this blankie. I know it will involve more cutting at the end, but I think a heavier quilt will be well worth it - especially on those cold Minnesota nights.)

Oh happy day, I've finally decided on the design of the first "100 Good Wishes" quilt. It's going to be a "rag quilt" and I couldn't be more excited. Ever since I first saw this design I was intrigued, and after a lot of Internet searching, and a good bit of help/advice from Cora I made one. It was a small, doll-sized blanket, perfect for a practice quilt. (Thanks for the suggestion Cora.) It was so much fun to make and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I'm so excited to start sewing that I can hardly stand it.

What's even better was that I found the fabric for the back of the quilt. It's pink, which I love, and has tiny pictures of hearts, flowers, and ladybugs on it. Best of all though is that it is also printed with a variety of "wishes". For example, love, believe, wish, play, create, etc... It couldn't be more perfect. When I came across it in the store it stopped me dead in my tracks and I just knew that was the one.

I plan to use this fabric for the back of the "rag quilt" and the binding for the the second quilt. I have a lot of washing, ironing, cutting, and sewing in my future, and couldn't be happier. As soon as the long weekend's over the fun will begin :-)

I loved Raggedy Ann & Andy growing up as a child. I had a quilt with the Raggedy's on it that I completely wore to shreds. Lucky for me, my Grandma Irene had an identical quilt that I was given when she passed away that I plan to pass on to our daughter one day. In addition, my Grandma Betty made my sisters and I a life size Raggedy Ann & Andy doll. They were at least 36" tall if not bigger, and I remember being able to dress up in their clothes when we were little. I was lucky enough to find the exact pattern (it came out in 1974) on E*Bay, and purchased it. It's my hope to be able to make a set of these dolls for our little one(s) as well one day. So, as you can see, the Raggedy's were a big part of my life growing up and I hope to be able to share that with our baby also.

I am so excited that you are part of our family. All though I have not been here very long, I have some words of advice for you.

1. Laugh & Smile
No matter how many times they say "no", when you laugh and smile, you'll somehow get your way.

2. Hugs & Kisses
Don't fight it! Somebody is always wanting to give you hugs and kisses. They can't help themselves. I sometimes don't let on, but I really do like them and you will too. You can never get enough!

3. Discover
Touch everything! Taste it too! That's how you learn. Even when mama and daddy say "no", give it a try. Apply rule #1 from above and you're golden. Parents love that kind of thing!

4. Friends
You can never have too many good friends. I talk to everyone when we are out and abut. I have many friends in my crib as well as on TV. If you are friendly to everyone, people can't help but to like you.

5. Love
I don't much other than I love my mama and daddy and they love me too. I know that your mama and daddy love you. Know what's so great about love? No matter how "naughty" mama and daddy might say you are, they still love you and always will. They can never stop ... it's AWESOME!

6. Family
I have a lot of family and so do you. In fact, you're our newest member. Take it from me, family is great! Yeah, you'll have your share of "crazies" amongst the group, but for the most part everyone is pretty cool. Cherish your family as they are important. They will help you all through life. I will also be here for you. Any questions, you call. I'll show you the ropes.

Welcome home! I am so happy that you've become a member of our family. I look forward to getting to know you. Your Mommy & Daddy requested that I give you a piece of advice or a "wish". Well, here goes...

My advice to you is to have a strong work ethic. It is important in life to always work your hardest and do your best even when you may not feel like it. You'll need to work hard in everything you do. Not only in school, but at your job, at relationships with friends and family, and most importantly, you need to work hard for yourself! You'll be able to hold your head up high and say with confidence that you did your best.

I love the fact that butterflies start out as little caterpillars then cocoon themselves to break out as amazing butterflies. This has similarities to the adoption process. In the beginning a dream is started, you cocoon yourself to get through the waiting, and end up flying high with a new beautiful child.

Kristine, Ryan & Calvin were also kind enough to send us a wonderful ladybug nightlight that will one day be placed in our daughter's bedroom. The note accompanying the light said "ladybugs are a sign of good luck in the Chinese adoption community. It is said that if you see ladybugs that good things will happen soon!". (As an aside, we believe in this very much and I look for ladybugs all over the place.)

"The Land of Opportunity"

Once upon a time in a land far, far away, called Norway, a little boy was growing up to be a young man. He had heard other people talking about a land far, far away called The Land of Opportunity. He would dream about how wonderful this land would be while growing up. When he was 25-years old, Jens, bought a ticket to sail to this new land called America. He had to learn to speak and read a new language and learn new customs but, he was very smart and learned quickly. It was only a short while and he could speak two languages and celebrate two different countries traditions.

In The Land of Opportunity he met a lady, named Grace; they fell in love, married and had two children which they loved very much. Richard and Mary were their names. After the children had grown, Jens took Grace, Richard and Mary back to Norway so they could see where he had grown up, see how beautiful it was and understand some of the traditions that he shared with them.

Richard and Mary grew up dreaming about having good jobs, owning a beautiful place and having fun. They did grow up and found people they fell in love with and married. Mary married Mike Eckstein and they had 3 children that they loved very much. Cory is your uncle because he married Katie. Katie and your mom Kelly are sisters. Cory and his brother Trent and sister Shara grew up in The Land of Opportunity and had lots of fun together.

And so my little one(s), welcome to The Land of Opportunity and my wish for you is that all of your dreams come true. What are some of your dreams?
